As the seasons change, so do the challenges on the trails. Cooler temperatures, shorter days, and unpredictable weather can turn a simple hike into a serious situation. Before you head out:
✅ Check the weather and trail conditions — storms can roll in fast.
✅ Pack the 10 essentials (navigation, light, warmth, first aid, food, water, shelter, tools, fire, extra clothes).
✅ Tell someone your plan and when you expect to be back.
✅ Dress in layers and avoid cotton — it holds moisture and can lead to hypothermia.
✅ Be prepared for early darkness — always bring a headlamp, even for short hikes.

It's nice to see Mount Arrowsmith this morning with the peaks covered with new snow; another reason to pay attention to this post.
🚨 Callout – October 19 🚨
Late Sunday afternoon, Arrowsmith Search and Rescue was called to help locate a 64-year-old man who had become lost in the Cameron Lake area.
Our drone team was quickly in action, and within just 30 minutes of being called out, the drone was directly over the missing person. Using the drone’s position as a guide, the individual was able to follow it safely back to the road.
📞This call was a great example of how technology and teamwork can come together to bring fast, safe results.

🚨Callout Update – October 17
Friday, Arrowsmith Search and Rescue responded to a medical incident near Qualicum Bay involving a 77-year-old hiker who became unwell on the trail and was unable to continue on his own.
Our team provided immediate care and stabilized the subject before transporting to a location where he could be transferred to BC Emergency Health Services for further medical care.
❤️Thank you to our dedicated volunteers, BCEHS, and Airspan Helicopters for another well-coordinated response. We wish the subject a full recovery.

The shot of fear they gave us this week with the threat of losing SARtopo was real. I think we might all need a maps and compass refresher, despite the reprieve. 😆
🌿Over the weekend, Arrowsmith Search and Rescue assisted West Coast Inland SAR @westcoast.sar in a search near Ucluelet. Our team supported the operation by deploying drones to assist ground search efforts, and also provided ground search team members to work alongside partner agencies in the field.
⛰️This mission marked the first mutual aid deployment of our new drone vehicle (Drone #1); made possible by the generous support of 100 Women Who Care Oceanside. Their contribution is already enhancing our ability to respond effectively in critical situations.
We’re proud to stand with our fellow search and rescue teams and dedicated volunteers in service to our communities.
